Vargus USA is pleased to announce that Scott Golden is joining our team as Vice President of Sales & Marketing.

Scott comes to Vargus USA from Kennametal Inc. He has been employed by Kennametal for 11 years, most recently as Sales Manager. Additionally, Scott founded CPK Industrial Tooling, a distributor of high performance cutting tools, tooling systems and services that targeted end users of special and standard cutting tools.

Scott has over twenty years experience in sales, marketing, and engineering in the metalworking industry. He is well versed and experienced in implementing strategic sales plans, creating annual sales quotas and budgets, advertising and promotions, new product development, technical training, and application support.

AIS purchased the outside micrometer to measure a 60.5” diameter of a rock crusher component that is used in the aggregate industry. This inspection was necessary to prove that the machined diameter was within tolerance prior to shipment. Although there was a little delay at the border, they where most impressed with the quality, price and availability.

FactoryLink recently visited AIS, Automated Inventory Solutions. Here are some highlights of the trip, as told by our customer service representative, Claudia McDonald:

On October 3, 2011 I had the opportunity to travel to AIS headquarters in Kearneysville, West Virginia, along with Regional Managers Art Baker, Brian Glowe, Jim Jackson, Scott Musgrave, Sales Manager Mike Myers, and Mark Hauberg, President of TFL.

We were graciously picked up from our local airport in AIS private jet. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Sharon Shull, President and Chairman of the Board, Greg Mason, Vice President, and Eric Mason, Sales and Service Technician.

We were invited into their conference room where we met to discuss plans and sales strategies. After the meeting we were given a full plant tour and saw how a vending machine is made from start to finish.

Their manufacturing is state of the art, well organized and very impressive. All of the AIS employees we met were friendly, helpful and obviously proud of the product they manufacture.

We saw the new LC line of Keepers and other new products being made that will be shipped to countries as far away as Australia.

After the tour we had a short training period on the variety of reports one can obtain from these machines, and how easily they can be obtained.

The trip was overall impressive and not exhausting at all even after traveling a good 360 miles each way.

Tech Tip #5: Gaging Threaded Holes

To confirm the accuracy of a tapped hole, always use a Go-No Go gage. Never use a fastener (i.e.: screw, or bolt). Using a screw, or bolt will not allow you to verify size of the thread produced, but only indicate that the bolt used will fit in that particular hole. Go-No Gages can give indications as to where the thread produced is within the thread specification. A screw or bolt is not capable of giving such an indication. Accurate gages will also help predict remaining tool life by indicating tightness or looseness of the gage in the part.

The Cleveland Twist Drill Company, was founded in 1876. by Jacob D. Cox, Sr., he used $2,000 borrowed from his father to buy a 50 percent stake in C. C. Newton’s small twist drill factory in western New York. Later that year, he moved the company to Cleveland, Ohio. The 1968 merger of the Cleveland Twist Drill Company and the National Acme Company created Acme-Cleveland Corporation. Although Cleveland Twist Drill was Acme-Cleveland’s founding business, accounting for two-thirds of overall sales, it was sold in the fall of 1994 to longtime rival Greenfield Industries Inc. Cleveland Twist Drill tools are manufactured at product-specific plants across the globe. On-site development engineers and technical specialists assure that each tool meets the highest performance standards in the industry. In July 2009 TDC bought Cleveland Twist and is now part of Greenfield Industries.

Tech Tip #4: Threading: Flute Selection

The selection of a tool with the proper number of flutes for any round tool is important. A two-fluted tool will always have the greatest amount of chip space, and therefore should be the tool of choice in soft materials, or in situations where the tool will be run more than several diameters of itself deep. On the other hand, the two-fluted tool will usually be the weaker tool because of the thinner cross section of web.

Tools with more flutes ( 3,4,6,8,etc) will have a stronger backbone because those flutes are more shallow and provide much more cutting action. This will lead one to use a tool with more than two flutes in harder, tougher materials, or where stronger tools and less chip space are required.

Tech Tip #3: Drilling: Tendency to Over-speed

It is very common to over speed HSS tools as opposed to over feed. This generates excess heat at the cutting edges, prematurely dulling the tool and perhaps work hardening the work piece. HSS tools are designed to be fed heavily. Check the manufacturer's catalogs and literature to confirm ranges for cutting speeds and feeds. Use these guidelines as a starting point and work upward from there, but resist too high of a speed (RPM).

Tech Tip #1: Threading: Drill Formula for Metric Taps

The formula is Basic Major Diameter minus the Pitch = Hole Size.
For example, a M5 X 0.8 thread would be calculated as follows:
5.00mm minus 0.80mm = 4.20mm hole size.
Simply select the nearest available drill size.
The hole produced would yield approximately 70-75% percentage of thread.
